Good Advertising

The blogosphere seems to be one fire over Microsoft's new "Lauren" TV commercial. Frankly, I don't see what the commotion is about.



If the critics are correct, then "Lauren" is actually Lauren De Long, a Screen Actors Guild eligible actress; and apparently, if you look close enough, she never even enters the Apple store.

Even if all of that is true, it doesn't refute the fact that Apple's laptops are significantly more expensive than most PCs. It isn't a lie that Apple doesn't sell any 17-inch laptops for less than a grand. The advertisement doesn't make any reference to the quality of the machines (or contest any of the claims made in Apple's "I'm a PC" commercials) or provide any good reason to buy one other than price.

As far as I can tell, after years of horrible commercials and a series of flops, Microsoft seems to finally have hired an ad agency that put together a decent advertisement. It's not likely to persuade me to buy any of their products that I otherwise wouldn't; but they were destined to finally get at least one right. Congratulations, Microsoft.

Personally, I love this commercial and the other one with the guy. They highlight the fact that, aside from aesthetics, Macs really serve no purpose to common people. I recently switched from a PC desktop to a Macbook Pro at work. I love the Macbook, but I would never, ever spend that much money for a personal laptop. All I need a computer for is internet surfing, word processing and music storage, so why would I spend $1000+ on a Mac when I can get a PC to do that for <$600? And to people that say Macs are more reliable and last longer, I have known people with both Macs and PCs who have had them crap out before their time.

I will give Macs this... they are incredibly fun do use, and damn do they look good. I make the analogy that PCs are like DVD players, where all of them do the same basic things, but you get what you pay for. Macs are more like a video game console, with a standard interface and features and much better "out of the box" capabilities. They are much better for people who don't like tinkering and upgrading, but you do pay a premium for it. If I ever do end up getting a Mac, this will be the reason why - I don't mind occasionally paying a premium to just HAVE what I need rather than having to fight for it. Same reason I pay people to do my taxes. Plus, I anticipate needing a better computer when I head off to grad school. I am nothing but disappointed with my current PC. But in the end, Macs for most people are just a shiny, trendy toy that they'll never use for anything more than they could have done with a PC that cost half as much.

PJ - I've read quite a few reviews of the advertisement from people arguing that the commercial applies one thing or another. I think the success is in the fact that it is so open to interpretation.

In Praise of Southwest's 'C' Boarding Group

A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from someone complaining that their Southwest Airlines boarding pass had been assigned A20 (meaning they would be at least one of the first twenty passengers to board the plane). Despite the complaints, Southwest has resisted demands to assign seats on its flights, a decision which I personally applaud. Commuting Meets Technology

I'm finally out of the dark ages. I got an Android smartphone over the weekend and have since been in the process of exploring the Android apps market.  One thing I've immediately noticed is the really wide range of usefulness in the apps. For example, the WeatherBug app is fantastic. It automatically determines your location and gives you exact conditions for that location. On the other end of the spectrum, Google's Goggles app is supposed to be a type of 'visual search' where you snap of photo of something and Google searches for it. In each of my attempts to use it, the app hasn't returned any search results. I even took a photo of a bottle of Pepsi (figuring it as a common houseful item) and got nothing.
